Florent Willems was born in Liege, Belgium in 1823. He trained at the Academie in Mechelen. He became active in France, first exhibiting in Paris at the Salon of 1840, and settled there in 1844 as a painter and restorer. He gained considerable success and celebrity becoming a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1853, and Officer in 1864 and a Commander in 1878. He was also appointed to the Order of Leopold, Chevalier in 1851, Officer in 1855 and Commander in 1860. He modeled his work on that of Dutch genre painters of the 17th and 18th centuries.
