Noisy
A young lady of the Kansei era (1789-1801), described as a virgin in the cartouche, teases a cat. From the series Fuzoku sanjuniso, "Thirty-Two Aspects of Customs and Manners."

Reading a Newspaper by Yoshitoshi
Newspapers were introduced into Japan soon after the Meiji Restoration of 1868. The sub-title of this satirical series, called "A Collection of Desires", reads "I want to cancel my subscription." The text makes a veiled comparison between the woman and a cat in heat.

A Mother-In-Law
In Japan as in the West, mothers-in-law were not popular figures: this hard-eyed woman with her cat is specifically described in the text of the print as shutome, "mother-in-law." From a caricature series Kigen kurabe, "A Comparison of Temperments," whose theme is the evils of drink - note the sake-bottle shaped cartouche.

Cat Demon
A hero recoils as a beautiful woman suddenly turns into her true form, a magical cat demon, and leaps into the air. This is a scene from a play called "Diary of Travels along the Tokaido," performed at the Ichimura Kabuki theater in 1861. The play is based on stories associated with the Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido, traditional stopping-places on the coast road from Edo to Kyoto.
