Pet Lamb
Georgina sat at the hearth, worrying over a newborn lamb, who was too feeble. Such things happen, when lambing goes at early spring. There were two of them lambs, and one was all right, but the other one… Oh please, if Granny comes too late, it won’t live. All Georgina could do was to give it some warm milk. “Mary? Haven’t you heard anything?” Georgina’s little sister stood on a bench and tried to see through a snowstorm, her palms on both sides of her face. “What, Georgie?” “Dog’s barking!” “Ah? No… It’s just a wind…” “Mary, go open the door! She’s coming!” A little sister looked at her bare feet. “Georgie, I honestly don’t…” “Listen, we need her. It needs her. She’s always there where someone needs her so desperately! So move!” There were tapping of little feet on a cold stone floor, an old lock rambled and an old door creaked, the wail of wind was heard, and then Granny’s voice: “Mary, that’s a shame, good gel doesn’t go barefoot, where your sister looks? ” (с)М.
