Born in Paris, Charles Hutin first exhibited there at the Salon of 1874. Hutin painted genre and narrative subjects as well as still lifes. One of Hutin’s paintings is in the museum at Langres, France, and the inscription on the frame plate indicates that the first owner of the present work acquired it in a lottery held by the Friends of the Arts in Pau, in the Pyrйnйes region of southern France, in 1886.
